Bobeck “Bob” Modjtahedi, MD, KPSOM Associate Professor of Clinical Science, is lead author of new guidelines recently published on the diagnosis and management of autoimmune retinopathy (AIR), a rare disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the retina, leading to vision loss. The guidelines, published in the peer-reviewed journal Ophthalmology Retina, follow the launching of a task force by the American Academy of Ophthalmology to advance the understanding of this complex condition.
Dr. Modjtahedi, who also serves as a member of the AIR task force, also recently discussed new diagnostic frameworks for categorizing AIR based on specific clinical criteria in a guest appearance on Experts InSight, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s podcast. The new guidelines address the challenges in diagnosing AIR, which can mimic inherited retinal diseases, and outline a standardized approach to classification for both clinical practice and research.
