Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine student Elaine Liang was recently appointed to serve on the California Medical Association’s (CMA) Council on Ethical, Legal, and Judicial Affairs (CELJA) for the 2025-2026 term.
CELJA is charged with studying and making recommendations concerning evolving philosophical and social issues and trends of immediate or long-term concern to the medical profession, with special emphasis on medical ethics, bioethics, and attendant areas. The council functions as an appellate body for the purpose of hearing and deciding appeals for disciplinary actions taken by component medical societies.
As the sole medical student sitting on the 2025-2026 council chaired by Dr. Karl Steinberg, Liang will participate in governance activities for the House of Delegates such as interpreting CMA articles of incorporation and bylaws, enforcing the CMA’s conflict of interest policy, providing oversight of the Subcommittee on Professional Liability, soliciting testimony as needed, and taking part in issues resolution.
“I’m honored to join the Council on Ethical, Legal, and Judicial Affairs and look forward to contributing to thoughtful, statewide discussions on current ethical issues shaping our profession,” said Liang.
