The third annual Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC) Health Equity Leadership Summit was held July 10-11 in Pasadena, Calif., which brought together more than 150 healthcare advocates, leaders, and physicians. The summit offered participants a space for in-depth conversations, hands-on trainings, and workshops focused on advancing health equity across the state.
PHC honored individuals and organizations that have demonstrated remarkable leadership and dedication to improving access to care and reducing health disparities for underserved and marginalized groups during the Summit. Notably, Alma A. Lopez, MD, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine Assistant Professor of Health Systems Science, received the Robert D. Sparks, MD, Leadership Award for her excellence in mentoring future physicians, advancing health equity, and developing innovative curricula that address systemic oppression and the social determinants of health. As a co-founder of MiMentor, a national organization committed to mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals, and leader in the Family Medicine Residency Program at White Memorial Medical Center in East Los Angeles, she has developed models for mentorship and championed innovative curricula that address structural oppression and the social determinants of health.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected for the Robert D. Sparks, MD, Leadership Award for my work in health equity,” said Dr. Lopez. “I would like to acknowledge and thank my amazing colleagues, past and present, who are committed to improving the health of communities - the work we do together is what makes the difference. In these uncertain times, now more than ever, we need to work collaboratively towards the goal of improving community health in every way possible.”
