KPSOM Professor of Health Systems Science Quyen Ngo-Metzger, MD, MPH, explores diabetes screening thresholds for different racial and ethnic groups in an editorial recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

In the publication, Dr. Ngo-Metzger says that “screening is only the first step in the prevention and treatment continuum. The USPSTF [US Preventive Services Task Force] already recommends risk-based preventive services for other conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and infectious disease. To address the current inequity in diabetes screening, the USPSTF should apply the same consideration to its diabetes screening recommendation.” The USPSTF is an independent, volunteer panel of national experts in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine.
