Telehealth Visits Shown as Effective as Office Visits

Study co-authored by KPSOM researcher indicates video appointments do not lead to substantially more in-person follow-ups

Patients who saw their physicians by video or phone did not seek substantially more follow-up care than those who had more traditional in-office visits, according to research recently published in JAMA Network Open.

“This study answers the previously open question about whether video and phone visits are less efficient because the bulk of patients might have to come to clinic anyway to resolve their clinical issue,” said lead author Mary Reed, DrPH, KPSOM Associate Professor of Health Systems Science and research scientist with the Division of Research at Kaiser Permanente.
