Although atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains the leading cause of death in the United States, studies show that some patients may avoid using cholesterol-lowering statin drugs due to concerns about side effects and long-term dependence. Dr. Quyen Ngo-Metzger, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine professor of health systems science and co-author of a 2019 JABFM study on statin use, is among experts advocating for communication, visual aids, and simple regimens to help patients understand the benefits.
