Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) recently hosted its fourth annual Service-Learning Practicum Symposium and Community Celebration, bringing together students, faculty, and community partners to highlight projects that address social drivers of health and advance health equity. Designed as the culminating experience of the two-year Service-Learning course, the symposium featured the work of the Class of 2027, students who collaborated closely with local Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and grassroots organizations to implement solutions to real-world health challenges.

The event was co-hosted by the Department of Health Systems Science and the Office of Community Engagement. Dean and CEO John L. Dalrymple, MD, opened the gathering with a welcome message, followed by remarks from Lori Carter-Edwards, PhD, MPH, KPSOM Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Government Affairs. Students then presented their practicum projects in rotating small-group sessions attended by faculty, preceptors, and staff from partner organizations, highlighting a wide range of efforts on digital posters.

“These are not just academic projects,” said Paul Chung, MD, MS, Chair of Health Systems Science. “They represent long-term relationships and a deep understanding of the communities we serve. The work they’re doing is exactly what we need more of in healthcare.”

The Service-Learning course places students in FQHCs and community-based organizations during their first and second years of medical school. Students identify a health equity priority, co-design an intervention, and evaluate its impact. The course’s goals are rooted in fostering social accountability, developing trust-based partnerships, and preparing students to work in interdisciplinary teams to improve systems of care.

This year’s event also featured the presentation of Spirit of Service-Learning Awards by course co-director Isabel Chen, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Health Systems Science, and Dr. Chung. The awards recognize students and community partners who demonstrate exceptional collaboration and innovation in advancing the goals of the Service-Learning program.

Following the presentations, participants gathered at the school’s rooftop garden for a networking lunch, celebrating the partnerships that made each practicum possible. Among the many community-based collaborators were Venice Family Clinic, UMMA Health, Valley Community Healthcare, ParkTree Community Health Center, and JWCH Institute. KPSOM also recognized the contributions of dozens of individual mentors and organizations who supported student projects through site-based guidance, lived experience, and subject matter expertise.
