The Los Angeles Business Journal (LABJ) recently recognized the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine as “Educational or Institutional Program Of The Year” at its 2023 Health Care Leadership Awards.

The annual LABJ awards ceremony honors individuals and organizations “that have made great strides in providing better quality of health care in Los Angeles,” according to the publication. This year’s event was held August 23 at The Biltmore Los Angeles.

KPSOM was among the 14 organizations and individuals honored at this year’s event. The ceremony recognized the achievements and contributions of hospitals, medical centers, executives, clinics, volunteers, community organizations, in-home health and telehealth providers, and more.

In honoring the school, LABJ noted that KPSOM is “…[D]evoted first and foremost to offering an outstanding, forward-thinking medical education, making an impact for future physicians as well as the greater community. The school’s curriculum is built on the three pillars of Biomedical Science, Clinical Science, and Health Systems Science. Students think broadly about the ways care can be more effective for everyone and learn how to advocate for better health in homes, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.”

In a message to the honorees, LABJ Publisher Josh Schimmels further noted why the publication has chosen to highlight the achievements of healthcare leaders in Southern California.

“In recent times, health care professionals at all levels in our region have been asked to do so much and have accomplished countless essential tasks while helping to pioneer innovative new technologies and treatment protocols,” Schimmel wrote. “The leaders of this industry have had difficult and transformational decisions to make every day and we all owe them a debt of gratitude.”

The LABJ Health Care Leadership Awards, Schimmel said, “[H]onor the particularly outstanding leaders in health care for our region. These individuals, organizations and programs have made remarkable strides helping Los Angeles (and beyond) to provide outstanding levels of care and treatment while fighting to help us navigate through uncharted waters and beyond.”
