Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) has announced the appointment of Carla Lupi, MD, as the next Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education (SADME), effective September 15, 2025.

Dr. Lupi has served as Interim SADME since October 2024, leading the Office of Medical Education through a pivotal period of curricular refinement and strategic planning. A founding member of the KPSOM leadership team, she previously held the role of Associate Dean for Assessment and Evaluation, where she developed systems for course-level and programmatic assessment, faculty educator development, and simulation-based instruction. Her leadership has played a key role in supporting accreditation efforts and advancing continuous quality improvement across the curriculum.

With more than two decades of experience in medical education, Dr. Lupi has held senior academic roles at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Her research portfolio reflects a strong commitment to medical education and reproductive health, with funded projects from the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation, the American Medical Association’s ChangeMedEd Initiative, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). Her scholarly work has focused on competency-based assessment, communication of clinical uncertainty, and non-directive pregnancy options counseling.

Dr. Lupi has also contributed to national efforts to improve educational outcomes through leadership in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency Pilot Project, and service on the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) USMLE Step 2 Interdisciplinary Review Committee and Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) Working Group. She is widely recognized as a thought leader in competency-based education and the implementation of entrustable professional activities (EPAs), having contributed to national toolkits, faculty development initiatives, and scholarly publications that have shaped the field.

In her new role, Dr. Lupi will oversee the integration of Biomedical, Clinical, and Health Systems Sciences across KPSOM’s four-year curriculum. She will provide strategic leadership for faculty development, curricular design and implementation, educational technology, simulation, and library services, working closely with department chairs and faculty to ensure the curriculum remains innovative, inclusive, and aligned with the school’s mission. This includes advancing early clinical immersion, multimodal anatomy instruction, experiential learning, and the longitudinal integrated clerkship model.

Dr. Lupi’s vision, experience, and commitment to innovation will be instrumental as the school enters the next phase of its academic journey that will be unveiled next month through the forthcoming KPSOM 2026-2030 Strategic Plan.
