As part of its ongoing evolution, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) has unveiled a revised set of core values that will serve as a foundation for the school’s next five years and beyond, guiding decision-making, culture, and collaboration across all areas of the institution.

While not a departure from the school’s original values, which were developed before KPSOM welcomed its first cohort of students in 2020, the revised framework offers clearer, more streamlined language aligned with peer institutions and reflective of KPSOM’s experience over its first five years. The update comes in tandem with the development of KPSOM’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, which is currently underway and slated for completion later this year.

“As we prepare to enter our next chapter as a world-class medical education institution, we saw this as the right moment to revisit and reaffirm our values,” said Dr. John L. Dalrymple, Dean and CEO of KPSOM. “These values reflect what we’ve learned, what we stand for, and where we’re headed. They represent not only who we are, but who we aspire to be.”

The revised values are:

Collaboration: Nurture a culture that fosters the collaborations needed to advance the health of patients and communities

Equity: Promote equity by advancing access, opportunities, and outcomes for members of the KPSOM community

Excellence: Pursue excellence across all education and health activities, driving quality outcomes

Innovation: Foster a culture of innovation, discovery, and curiosity to pioneer advancements in healthcare and education

Service: Serve the needs of students, patients, and communities with joy, compassion, and empathy

Trustworthiness: Uphold the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and humility to foster trust among members of the KPSOM community

The updated values have been posted to the school’s Mission, Vision, and Values page, where they will inform strategic priorities, institutional communications, and the day-to-day experience of students, faculty, and staff at KPSOM.
