José Barrera, a student at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, has been named a recipient of the 2026 AMA Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship, a prestigious national award that provides $10,000 in support to medical students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need.
The scholarship is awarded annually by the American Medical Association Foundation to help future physicians pursue their medical education and career goals. For Barrera, the recognition reflects both his accomplishments as a medical student and his commitment to advancing patient care.
"I am honored to be selected as a recipient of the AMA Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship," said Barrera. "Being a fourth-year medical student going into Emergency Medicine, this award will significantly help with the costs of doing away rotations and applying to residency this year. With the generosity of the AMA, I will be able to be one step closer to becoming the physician that helps underserved communities where they need it most."
