Dr. Linda W. Shiue, MD, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) Clinical Associate Professor of Clinical Science, has developed a groundbreaking culinary medicine course at KPSOM.
As the first Director of Culinary Medicine at Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Shiue's passion for the "food as medicine" movement led her to create a month-long elective for KPSOM students, marking a significant milestone in her career. The selective course aims to fill the gap in traditional medical education, teaching future doctors about the vital connection between nutrition and health and emphasizing the importance of working with multidisciplinary teams to address chronic illnesses related to diet.
Launched in March, the culinary medicine elective quickly garnered interest, attracting students from various disciplines beyond primary care, such as dermatology and anesthesiology. Dr. Shiue, a trained chef, taught the cooking portion, while other parts of the course were led by experts from the Kaiser Permanente Center for Healthy Living in Southern California.
