Linda W. Shiue, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Clinical Science at Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM), has been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as one of “10 women physicians making their mark on medicine.” The national recognition highlights women physicians who are using their expertise, leadership, and influence to improve patient care, advance medical education, and strengthen communities.
While announcing the honor , the AMA highlighted Dr. Shiue’s work advancing culinary and lifestyle medicine, including efforts to integrate nutrition into patient care and medical education. The organization noted her leadership in teaching patients practical cooking skills and preparing future physicians to address nutrition, food insecurity, and preventive health as part of whole-person care.
“This recognition reflects the collective efforts of many colleagues, mentors, and collaborators who have supported the growth of culinary medicine and lifestyle medicine over the years,” said Dr. Shiue, who is also Director of Culinary and Lifestyle Medicine at Kaiser Permanente Mission Bay (San Francisco). “I am grateful for the support of my leadership and colleagues across Permanente Medicine, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, The Teaching Kitchen Collaborative, and The Culinary Institute of America as we’ve worked to expand how nutrition and food education can improve health. It has been deeply meaningful to engage with patients, clinicians, medical trainees, and chefs while helping advance this work.”
Dr. Shiue, along with a team of faculty, physicians, and KPSOM administrators, developed and now teach KPSOM’s culinary medicine elective. Launched in 2024, the elective combines nutrition science, food as medicine, and hands-on cooking instruction and gives medical students practical experience in preparing healthy meals while exploring how nutrition, lifestyle factors, and interdisciplinary care contribute to better health outcomes.
In addition, Dr. Shiue leads Thrive Kitchen, a culinary medicine program that teaches Kaiser Permanente members practical approaches to preparing healthy, flavorful meals. Through virtual cooking classes and patient education programs, she helps participants build skills and confidence while demonstrating that healthy eating can be both accessible and culturally inclusive.
A nationally recognized leader in culinary medicine, Dr. Shiue is a professionally trained chef and is the author of Spicebox Kitchen: Eat Well and Be Healthy with Globally Inspired, Vegetable-Forward Recipes. She serves on the board of the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative and is a former board member of Meals on Wheels San Francisco and the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.
The AMA recognition celebrates physicians who are improving health through innovation, leadership, advocacy, and education. Through her work in patient care, community engagement, and medical education, Dr. Shiue continues to advance the role of nutrition and culinary medicine in creating healthier communities and preparing the next generation of physicians.
