A recent study of nearly 70,000 COVID patients within the Kaiser Permanente Southern California healthcare system showed that those infected by the Omicron variant suffered less severe outcomes than those infected by the Delta variant.
The research indicated that compared with patients diagnosed with the Delta variant those who had Omicron were 53 percent less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19, 74 percent less likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit, and 91 percent less likely to die of the disease.
The pre-print study, co-authored by Sara Y. Tartof, PhD, MPH, a KPSOM Assistant Professor of Health Systems Science and an infectious disease epidemiologist with the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research & Evaluation, was published on MedRxiv, a website on which researchers share preliminary results.
