We believe diversity brings us together. It inspires us to respect the experiences and perspectives of others. Diversity encompasses much more than culture, race, and religion.
We believe in diversity of thought, life experiences, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, language, abilities, veteran status, socioeconomic background, and much more.
Our commitment to inclusiveness helps create both clinical and classroom learning environments that are innovative and intimate, so students and educators are valued and appreciated for the different viewpoints they share each day.
Our six-pillar framework ensures that equity, inclusion, and diversity are woven into every aspect of Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, including pipeline efforts, admissions, staffing, curriculum, student support, and community.
“We want to draw our students from all backgrounds, and create an environment in which they learn from each other and are comfortable with each other.”
Mark A. Schuster, MD, PhD
Founding Dean and CEO Emeritus, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine
When Kaiser Permanente was founded during World War II, its guiding vision was to bring affordable healthcare to the masses. In the 70-plus years since, Kaiser Permanente has continued to be recognized for its unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity.
You'll learn as part of a diverse and inclusive cohort, collaborating closely and developing skills that are essential to providing care, including self-awareness, empathy, and strong communication.
You'll also be trained to treat patients from this perspective by considering their culture and context, how those factors play into their health, and what impact your learnings may have on their community. For example, you'll learn how systemic issues and external forces, from geography to socioeconomics, can adversely affect your patients. As a part of the local community, you will have the opportunity to interact with and help treat real patients, hear their stories firsthand, and connect how concepts learned in the classroom come to life in the field.
We have purposefully assembled a faculty that reflects our definition of diversity. Our faculty body is multifaceted, with roots in diverse communities nationwide, giving each educator a unique perspective on providing exceptional care. Together, they have created the foundation of the school's coursework and teaching philosophy.
When you enroll at the school and join the intentional culture we're cultivating, you're also making a commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity. You'll be asked to help uphold the school's values by recognizing and embracing the benefits of diversity. You can contribute by helping make the school an environment that engages diverse individuals and encourages them to share their unique points of view.
The Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity carries out Kaiser Permanente’s and the school’s commitment to those values, which are rooted in our namesake’s founding mission of improving the health of members and communities.
