Acknowledging the school’s commitment to health equity for all, and to inclusiveness and diversity in medical education and the health professions, the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) has commended the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine (KPSOM) for its mission for equity, inclusion, and diversity. KPSOM received five commendations, two of which highlighted the school’s EID-related work, from the accrediting body, which has named KPSOM a candidate for accreditation.
The school announced the commendations during Global Diversity Awareness Month, which is commemorated each October to promote inclusion and equity around the world. The commission applauded the school for “a robust foundational focus on equity, inclusion, and diversity (EID) that is inculcated throughout all parts of the organization, including strategic planning, admissions, curriculum, assessment, and program evaluation,” and its “commitment to an innovative curriculum that emphasizes equity, service-learning, and population health with clear passion for these educational approaches demonstrated by leadership, faculty, staff and students.”
With equity at its core, WSCUC pursues excellence through rigorous accreditation standards applied flexibly, empowering all its member institutions to achieve their missions. With one of the most diverse allopathic medical school student bodies in the United States, KPSOM has demonstrated its commitment to incorporating equity, inclusion, and diversity into every aspect of its program, as evidenced by the commission’s commendations.

This status is a preliminary affiliation with the commission awarded for a maximum period of five years. Candidacy is an indication that the institution is progressing toward accreditation.
