How family and friends provide support for those with cancer

Study examines factors influencing access to informal caregivers, who give emotional and physical assistance during treatment

In a recent study of cancer survivors, 55.2 percent reported having an informal caregiver, such as a family member or friend, during or after treatment. Researchers indicated that more study is needed to determine if those who don’t have the benefit of a family member or friend to assist them may need more formal caregiver support in order to complete their therapy and transition to post-treatment life. The study was co-authored by Dr. Quyen Ngo-Metzger, KPSOM Professor of Health Systems Science.
