Antibiotic Use Shows Limited Effect on Preschool Obesity

Study co-authored by KPSOM researcher explores early oral antibiotic usage on growth trajectory

Antibiotic usage in children under 2 has little effect on their growth trajectory from ages 2 to 5, new research published in the International Journal of Obesity shows.

The study findings, based on the electronic health records of over 430,000 children from 29 U.S. health systems, found that antibiotic usage in the 58 percent who received them only led to an average 0.7 percent greater rate of weight gain, corresponding to 0.05 kg of additional weight.

Jonathan Finkelstein, MD, MPH, KPSOM Senior Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, was among the study co-authors.
