What inspires you in your work?
All of the work I have done as a clinician and physician leader at Kaiser Permanente over the past 40 years is inspired by my love for this organization. I have a deep appreciation for the privilege of working in an organization with a social mission and purpose, and values that are completely congruent with my own. The primacy of patient care and the critical importance of community health inform every decision we make and reinforce our institutional commitment to supporting the professionalism of medicine.
If you could change one thing about medical education, what would it be?
I would relieve the burden of debt that graduating medical students carry, which far too often drives their choice of specialty.
What's your secret vice?
I have an insatiable appetite for literary fiction, which I consume every chance I get. My iPad is filled to bursting with e-books, and bookshelf space in our home is rapidly disappearing.
What life experiences have taught or changed you the most?
Being a parent and a grandparent. Experiencing firsthand the fears, anxieties, joys, and delights of raising our son made me a much more empathetic and, I believe, effective pediatrician. And the unmitigated and incomparable joy of being a grandparent to our two grandsons has been life-changing.
