President, Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Hawaii Health Plan and Hospitals
What’s the most important quality for doctors to have?
Empathy and the ability to really listen to what is being said and what is not being said and then probe for understanding.
What’s your first health-related memory?
There are many. I was hyperactive as a kid and spent a lot of time in the emergency room. I had three concussions, had my stomach pumped three times, was hit by a car, and broke my arm: all by the time I was in eighth grade.
What’s the first item on your bucket list?
Learning to speak another language.
What would people close to you say are your best and worst qualities?
They’d say my best quality is that I can talk to and relate to anyone. My worst quality is that I can sometimes be obsessive-compulsive about the details of my life.
